Our History
Thomas Stockwell Simms launched the Simms Company in 1866. Mr. Simms purchased a small broom and brush enterprise with funds as a Veteran from the American Civil War by using his bonus and soldiers’ back pay. This start-up operation opted to move to Saint John, NB in 1872. This was a very busy port city at this point, famous worldwide for its’ shipbuilding contributions.
Thomas Simms underwent many difficulties but persisted with a wide variety of talents. He lost two wives and dealt with a terribly catastrophic factory fire. He managed to focus in spite of these tragedies and propelled his company ahead.
Simms travelled the globe. He was among the very first brush-makers to go to China in the 1900s to purchase bristles directly. The lay missionary movement was something he was a part of. The Simms Memorial Baptist Church is situated in India and is considered to be a significant enterprise.
Lewis Wesley Simms
After the founding father expired in 1908, Lewis Wesley Simms took over running the Company. Over the next half a century, Lewis Simms presided as the President. LW had a powerful presence and commanding personality. The company broadened from its regional roots to become a national business. Lewis produced automated brush-making equipment and endorsed it, changing the industry forever. Inside the Canadian corporate environment, he obtained national prominence. He was notably the president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Manufacturing Association.
LW Simms was posthumously awarded with a Canadian Hardware Houseware Manufacturing Association’s Industry Hall of Fame and also the New Brunswick Business Hall of Fame. He was identified as a master of employee relations plus a visionary in all things business-related. The achievements his company speaks volumes.
The founder’s great-grandson, Thomas Stockwell Simms III continues growing the company’s sound integrity, building on the cultures that founded the business. By developing a seasoned and creative labor force, stable management and colourful merchandising, the plant capacity centered on new product advancement and innovation with investments in the latest equipment.
The advertising and marketing head office and customer service are located in Saint John, NB. The business manufacturing facility and warehouse hub can be found in Erin, Ontario. The company’s success may be associated with its reliable quality and service and constructive business ethics.
